History of Chuo Bukkyo Gakuin Buddhist Seminary

1920, May Approved for establishment by Kyoto Prefecture, Chuo Bukkyo Gakuin Buddhist Seminary was founded in the precincts of Hongwanji (two-semester system).
1922, January The campus was relocated to Jumpu hall (the now headquarters of Kyoto parish).
1922, September The campus was relocated to Nishiyama Betsuin (Headquarters Branch).
1928, July The campus was moved to the current location. The construction of school building and boarding house was completed.
1929, April The advanced course (six months) was set up.
1931, April The regular course was divided into two classes because of the increased number of students.
1931, October The women’s department was established.
1935, November The construction of lecture hall and special-purpose classroom was completed. The ceremony celebrating the 15th anniversary was held.
1936, April The term of study for the advanced course was extended from six months to one year.
1937, April The term of study for the regular course was extended from six months to one year.
1940, October The ceremony celebrating the 20th anniversary was held.
1941, May The new system was adopted: special course (one year), regular course first term (two year), and regular course second term (four year).
1941, December The academy was authorized as youth school.
1942, May The special course (one year) was opened at the women’s department.
1945, April The academy was closed for one year because of World War II.
1945, November The academy temporarily opened a kyoshi minister’s training school.
1946, April The academy reopened.
1946, November The ceremony celebrating the 25th anniversary was held.
1947, April The academy opened the regular course (one-year program for residential minister training).
1950, April The academy opened the postgraduate course.
1950, November The ceremony celebrating the 30th anniversary was held.
1959, October The ceremony celebrating the 40th anniversary was held (with the attendance of Shonyo Shonin).
1972, November The ceremony celebrating the 50th anniversary was held. The academy opened the correspondence course.
1974, April Shimmon (Heir to Monshu) at that time (Sokunyo Monshu Emeritus) took charge of a lecture (April 1974 – March 1977).
1979, April The regular course was divided into three classes (with prefabricated classrooms added).
1981, June The construction of the new school building (a three-storied structure) was completed.
1981, October The ceremony celebrating the 60th anniversary was held (with the attendance of Sokunyo Monshu Emeritus).
1991, October The ceremony celebrating the 70th anniversary was held (with the attendance of Sokunyo Monshu Emeritus).
1994, April The regular course was divided into four classes.
1997, February Fuyoku Dormitory (two buildings for male and female) was constructed.
1997, November The construction of the new lecture hall was completed. The ceremony for the completion was held (with the attendance of Sokunyo Monshu Emeritus).
1998, January Memorial service and party celebrating the completion of the academy’s educational facilities was held.
1998, April The postgraduate course was divided into two classes.
2001, November The ceremony celebrating the 80th anniversary was held (with the attendance of Sokunyo Monshu Emeritus).
2003, November The construction of Fuyoku Hall (library and alumni house) was completed.
2005, April Shimmon at that time (Sennyo Monshu) took charge of a lecture.
2007, April Shimmon at that time (Sennyo Monshu) took charge of a lecture (until the academic year of 2012).
2011, November The ceremony celebrating the 90th anniversary was held with the attendance of the then Monshu (Sokunyo Monshu Emeritus) and the then Shinmon (Sennyo Monshu).
